We wish Kofi Annan the best in his negotiations. He is the last hope that Kenyans have to avoid an all-out civil war. However, the aftermath of the rigged elections has had serious consequences that will take years to undo:
1. Most of Kenyans have no more confidence in the elctoral process, ECK, presidency and the police force.
2. A number of indisciplined armed forces have sprung up everywhere including the SLDF, Chinkoror, Angola-Musumbiji, Mungiki etc. Many of them are now armed especially when you consider rumors doing rounds that Kibaki govt has looted the Army and Police armoury in order to arm the Mungiki. It is very hard to assume that they will return the guns after a peace settlement. These guns will be used to kill innocent and hardworking Kenyans.
3. Kibaki has introoduced and suspicion that will need alot of work for any future govt to undo. Infact, federalism/majimbo/ugatuzi might be the only solution to the current tribalism.
4. Everybody can now see why it is important to reduce the power of the presidency, to have an independent civil service, electoral commission, police force etc
In the long run, Kibaki and Musyoka will have to vactae statehouse and allow new leaders to spearheard national healing and reconcilliation.
